A Klutz' Guide to Photo Shooting

OK, true confessions time. I am an idiot.
Here's an example of what happens to me when I try to take a picture: First of all, I grab the camera and I point at what I want to take a picture of, and press the shutter release. Problem is, I'm shooting with a DSLR. That means you can't use a point and shoot technique to get a decent picture.
So this morning I looked out my window and saw a great bank of clouds and some birds flying around, so I did my usual, pointed at it and pressed the shutter release. I kept the shutter release pressed and shot about a dozen pictures in rapid succession. I was anticipating seeing some great shots of birds flying towards the camera. Then I looked at the LCD display and saw that there was nothing there because the ISO was 400 and the shutter speed was who knows what, and the aperture was at the widest so the frame was completely white; overexposed.
So I fixed the ISO and adjusted the shutter speed for a correct exposure and proceeded to take more pictures and then, guess what? I looked at the LCD again and the pictures were all blue because the white balance was set to tungsten from last night. So I fixed THAT and tried again. Now these were fairly fast moving clouds, but still, I was able to get an OK shot. Soon after this was shot the dark hue on the lower clouds turned white as the sun rose higher. This is not great, but it's ok. Imagine though that it was kids running around. I would have missed the capture I wanted entirely. That is the story of my life; always missing the moment because instead of immediately zeroing in on the settings I waste time pressing the shutter and chimping the camera to see what adjustments I should make.
At least I got the focus right.
